We were bamboozled by all the speculations of who was the designer for the prestigious Royal Wedding dress – the dress that will be in the history books of fashion. Finally, the dress race ended with Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, against all the high odds of it being Sophie Cranston, landing the fashion commission of the decade.
As the billions of viewer’s set their eyes while Kate Middleton walks the aisle, one can’t help but to admire the stunning Princess Catherine to-be, accompanied by Kate’s father, Michael Middleton while maid of honor, Pippa Middleton (also donning the elegant white number from Alexander McQueen) held on to the bride’s train.
“You looked beautiful” – whispered Prince William to Kate as soon as she walked the aisle, ushered in with sweet smiles… as tears began to form among the audience.
To our surprise, the gown echoes the Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, although made different with a V neckline with the bespoke lace appliqué from McQueen, with its skirt that resembles an opening flower made with white satin gazar arches and pleats and of course the train which was made with ivory and white satin gazar, spanning over 8ft.
But no wedding dress is complete without the tiara, especially when all the attention was on Princess Catherine’s wedding gown. Apparently, the Duchess of Cambridge wore a tiara loaned by the Queen for this regal occasion. Like any other royal family-related items, it too has a history.
The so-dubbed Cartier “Halo” tiara was made in 1936 for the Queen Mother, purchased by King George VI (as portrayed in the movie – The King’s Speech) for his wife just three weeks before he took over the throne from his brother. Later on, it was given to then-Princess (now Queen) Elizabeth on the occasion of her 18th birthday. More information on Kate’s Robinson Pelham earrings, Alexander McQueen heels here.
