Icebreaker, like many great things, started by accident. In 1994, a girlfriend introduced Jeremy Moon, CEO and Founder, to a merino wool farmer she had stayed with as she backpacked around New Zealand. The farmer was Brian Brakenridge and he had developed some prototype thermal underwear made from 100% pure New Zealand merino wool. It felt soft and sensual, looked lustrous and was totally natural. It was nothing like the wool Jeremy had grown up with, which was heavy and scratchy. And you could throw this stuff in the washing machine!
Each year, sheep in New Zealand’s Southern Alps grow thick merino wool, and each spring the coat is shorn. From this fibre, Icebreaker creates beautiful lightweight clothing that protects the body against extremes of temperature, breathes exceptionally well, resists odor and is designed to perform in the outdoors. Icebreaker is the natural choice to Give Green because it offers a natural choice in a world of petroleum-based synthetics. There are now 20-25 distinct pure merino fabrics in the Icebreaker system, covering underwear, mid layer, and outerwear. Wool was about to be reborn into whole new kind of clothing, cool in the heat, warm in the cold and as comfortable as it was fashionable.
Those in the know are ardent fans whose loyalty to the brand has extended beyond just the purchase to living the company’s unique take on life. For example, with most of the things you buy, you’re told little or nothing about how they’re made. Icebreaker is different. They have a deep commitment to animal welfare and the environment. Icebreaker’s unique Baacode will let you see the living conditions of the high country sheep that produced the merino fibre in the Icebreaker garment you just bought, meet the farmers who are custodians of this astonishing landscape, and follow every step of the supply chain.
Icebreaker was the first outdoor apparel company in the world to source merino directly from growers, and they are sure you will enjoy your journey back to the source.
Its just not enough to open a retail outlet, The Icebreaker TouchLab store in SoHo, in New York showcases the complete line – from Outdoor, Running, Cycling, Travel, Kids, to Underwear and City collections just so their American customers can get up close and touch their products all made from handpicked merino wool born in the Southern Alps of New Zealand.
